MIkroTik is a Latvian company founded in 1995 in Riga, with the aim of developing high-performance routers and wireless ISP systems. Its experience with standard hardware and complete routing systems enabled MikroTik to create the RouterOS operating system in 1997. Since 2002, MikroTik has also produced the hardware itself under the name RouterBOARD.
